The general term 'Urjah' means energy. The piece depicts the energy of the Goddess Gayatri who is compared with the energy of the Sun, and has an environmental effect. She changes into different form as per the time cycle of the day and also compared with trinity - Hindu Gods i.e. Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva. She is the creator during the early morning. The Preserver during the midday and Destroyer of Evil at the dusk part of the day.
The production uses the roots of the classical dance techniques in to contemporary movement vocabulary using powerful group choreography and specially designed costumes and multimedia video projection.
Based on the old Sanskrit texts, the literary universal meaning of the text still reflects its effects and relevance to the present contemporary modern world.
The project involves the creative language of two classical dance styles of different parts of India called Kathak from the North and Bharatnatyam from the South of India combining African rhythm, jazz and electronic music with melodious North Indian vocal singing.
It involves two female and two male dancers choreographed by Nilima Devi with an artistic input and an ‘outside eye’ provided by Stella Subbiah of Sankalpam Dance Company.
The music will be composed by Praveen Rao, the well known composer from India and famous for his modern contemporary input into classical creative music of North India.
