As a dancer, performer and teacher Nilima Devi constantly researches on the technique and movement quality of Kathak dance.

She has worked extensively on various projects with different Kathak exponents which gave her and excellent insight into the different styles, the use of the technique and choreography aspects of Kathak repertoires. This has helped her to analyze her artistic work as a teacher, choreographer and dancer and she takes utmost care while teaching and preparing her student for Kathak performances and to create quality dance artists.

The 'Urjah' piece has developed through research and development using the movement vocabulary of two classical styles and the use of classical music with cross cultural artists of West African drumming and Jazz music. The piece is created when Nilima Devi watched West African Drumming.

The energetic West African Drumming performance inspired Nilima Devi to create the 'Urjah' piece. The R&D of this was supported by Arts Council England and CICD and Richard Attenborough Centre who provided their space.
